Supporting Teachers in (Re)Constructing Identities as Leaders: The Role of Professional Development

Abstract

"Teacher leadership is a unique aspect of teacher identity. In this chapter we have explored the construction of 'identity as a teacher leader' through a review of the literature and have identified models and practices that have the potential to support teachers in developing identities as teacher leaders. The chapter adds significantly to the literature on science teacher identity in a research area that has been overlooked: how teachers (re)construct identities as leaders through professional development. The specific set of design principles we offer provide a theoretically-based and empirically-supported approach that can inform efforts of professional developers and researchers. By offering a conceptualization of teacher identity in conjunction with teacher leadership and a model for professional development aligned with this view, our chapter advances knowledge of science teacher identity."
